Tis the season for bright, shiny objects. But did you know that they are around us all year, tempting us in many ways? They get our attention very easily diverting us from any and all tasks, they make us feel guilty in the pleasure we get from them. We are hypnotized, addicted and we love the naughty wee things!
What are they? They are our distractions!
To be more precise, the distractions we encounter while working, especially entrepreneurs. Most of us work using computers at least some of the time. It used to be that the major distraction was email. Now it’s social media. You are supposed to be working on data or reports or your website and then you get the ‘ding’ sound that you have received a comment on your Facebook status. “I’ll just take one minute and find out who it is,” you think to yourself. Next thing you know a half hour has gone by. So then you shrug and say, “Oh well, not enough time left to finish my work so I might as well just check Twitter while I’m at it.”
Let’s think of some more. You Google something and of course you have to check out all the sites on the first page. In the process you find some new software with a free trial. You think, “Wow, I could really use that in my work,” and you dig deeper to find out more and play with the free trial.
You are sent information on how you can ‘guarantee your website will rank among the highest within two weeks!’ and you know that you really need this so off you go to explore. You actually buy the software and sign up in the program to improve your SEO rankings. Now you have two more offshoots to take you away from your main focus and your goals.
You and I both know what happens. The ‘do-it’ list gets longer and longer and the longer it gets the more bright, shiny objects you need to stuff down the guilt and overwhelm. This cycle just keeps repeating itself until you find yourself fiddling while Rome burns.
So now we know what this syndrome is and why we don’t want it. Especially when it comes to goaling (this is a new word I have invented because typing or writing ‘goal setting and achievement’ is just too long and I use it a lot!). Goaling takes focus and those BSO take that focus and smash it. In turn, your goals are smashed.
So let’s take a look at how you can avoid being annihilated.
- Turn OFF the ‘ding’ announcer
- Do not read email more than twice in a working day and set a time limit
- Give yourself one half hour a day on social media. Set the timer and honor it.
- Vow, with hand over heart, that you will not investigate anything new for your business until you have finished the long term target you have set for yourself
- Choose the time of day that you are most productive ie: morning, early afternoon, late afternoon, evening etc., and use this for your uninterrupted rubber meets the road focus time (at least 3 hours)
- Place yourself in a quiet environment where no one will bother you. Let the phone take messages
- If a thought sneaks through that is not to do with your focus, write it down for later
- Don’t allow a BSO to take you off on a tangent over a minor detail ie: a graphic
- Hire an assistant ie: bookkeeper, administrator, virtual assistant whatever you are not good at
- Practice saying ‘No’ to yourself and others
This is a great motivator:
- Decide what you want to gross for income in a year
- Divide that figure by 50 weeks (you take two weeks vacation. Yes, you do!) to give you what you would make in a week
- Now take that figure and divide it by 5 days to give you what you would make in a day
- Take that figure and divide it by 5 hrs. per day to give you what you need to make per hour in order to gross the figure you decided upon for the year.
Is what you are doing right now worth that much per hour? Look at what you shouldn’t be spending time on. Remember it takes five times longer to do something if you have to keep starting and stopping.
Do what you love to do vs. what sucks the life out of you. Automate, delegate or delete the rest. And when you see a Bright, Shiny Object trying to get your attention, put on your sunglasses!
Make it a goal!
