Cellular Performance
In a world where everyone has cellular phones, and people pass out their numbers like candy at halloween, a new vision has come to fruition. Google Voice is a service that allows you to obtain a personal phone number of your choosing that you can give out instead of your personal number. This opens the door to keep privacy in, and telemarketers out.
I received an invitation today to join Google Voice. A service Google provides where users can either:
- Tie their existing phone number into Google Voice or
- Get a new free phone number to use.
Each choice has its own pros and cons, but each user is only allowed to make one choice, and I chose to get a new Google Voice Phone number. The benefits that come with this choice are many. You can search for your choice phone number by zip code, area code, and even words! Yes! You can see you can get a phone number with your name in it!
Other features include linking your existing mobile device, home phone, and work phone to your new Google Voice line, and calls to your Google number are forwarded to the device you choose. You can have different groups, where different caller ids are sent to different phones. It also has built-in voicemail, SMS, and caller blocking! If you are trying to figure out how to screen cell phone calls or block calls on your cell phone, this is the way to do it.
Any unwanted callers that get a hold of your Google number can be blocked, by adding the caller id to the block list, or you can screen incoming calls. You can screen all calls, only blocked numbers, or all calls not in your contacts list. Google Voice has an extensive interface that enables you to very easily place calls from your new phone number, and send text messages.
Hope that you are lucky enough to receive an invitation to Google Voice, because it is one of the most amazing technologies to come across my desk in a long time.
