Lotion Colour
The first thing to do in a medical emergency is to make sure the victim is in no danger of further harm and to get professional help – call an ambulance or a doctor. In some cases, it may be quicker to take the individual to a doctor or to a hospital-emergency unit. However, do not move a badly injured person, except to remove him from danger.
Animal Bites: – Wash the wound thoroughly and put a clean, dry dressing on it. Let a doctor see it at the first opportunity in case there are any complications; a dog bite may well need to be treated with an anti-rabies injection.
Animal bites are seldom fatal and soon heal if there is no infection.
Bee, wasp and hornet stings: – Apply antihistamine cream to relieve the pain. If a bee or hornet sting is still buried in the skin, first take it out with a pair of tweezers or clean fingernails. With these fairly common stings, venom is injected into the skin, which causes inflammation and localised pain. In rare cases, the venom can spread through the body; it then requires urgent medical treatment.
Gnats and mosquito bites: – Bites by gnats and mosquitoes also cause inflammation and itching; but do not scratch the bite. Scratching can damage the skin, and the greater the area of skin damaged, the greater the risk of infection. Relieve the itching by applying calamine lotion or antihistamine cream.
Bloodsucking insects such as gnats and mosquitoes can be disease carriers. Seek a doctor’s advice if complications develop within a few days, especially if the bite occurred in a tropical or sub-tropical country.
Flea, lice and tick bites: - If the bite itches, apply antihistamine cream or calamine lotion to relieve the irritation. Bites from fleas, lice and ticks, which are also bloodsuckers, can be dangerous because the insects can transmit diseases such as tick fever and typhus. Ticks are usually picked up from vegetation and, like lice, can be removed by covering them with oil or nail varnish. A lighted cigarette held close would also dislodge them.
Jellyfish stings: – Treat simple stings with antihistamine cream or with calamine lotion. If the victim suffers shortness of breath or faints, get him to a hospital as quickly as possible. The common jellyfish found in the sea inflicts a sting that causes a burning sensation and swelling. In a few sensitive people, the stings cause shortness of breath and even dizziness. These reactions can also be caused by stings from the dangerous Portuguese Man o’ War, a large purple-red jellyfish that occasionally reaches the south-west coast of Britain. If stung by this jellyfish, get to hospital as soon as possible.
Nettle stings: – Relieve irritation with antihistamine cream, calamine lotion or a clean cloth wrung out under cold running water. Nettle stings are uncomfortable rather than dangerous and last only a few hours. There is no medical evidence to support the belief that discomfort can be relieved by rubbing the sting with a dock leaf!
By using these measures, you will not only be able to relieve some pain and discomfort but you may also save lives.
